Make sure your website is achieving the results you desire. Here are 7 reasons your bad website is chasing away customers and what you can do to increase conversions. Don’t let these mistakes reduce your chances of success online.

Your brand new site is getting some traffic, but still, you aren’t seeing any conversions or tangible results.¬†

It could be because your website is making some serious mistakes that are actually chasing people away. 

Is your website chasing away customers because …

1. You’re not considering the target market¬†

Don’t get fixated on design and making your site extra beautiful until you first think about your business objectives and the needs of your target customer.¬†

You need to first achieve the desired outcomes and objectives, then concern yourself with flashy new design trends.  

2. You have no valuable content 

This goes along with my previous point. Think about what your target customer needs and the type of content that would be valuable to them. Now deliver that on your content.  

If you have little content or none at all, there is essentially nothing for them to consume on your site. Your potential customer will land up not trusting you as much, and you could instead be forcing them away in the direction of your competitors who do deliver valuable content. 

3. Pages loading too slowly 

Pages that take longer than 3 seconds to load, lose 40% of their traffic. If you don’t like waiting for a webpage to open, what makes you think that your customers will. Make sure you don’t place too many images on a page and optimize the ones on the page. Remove unnecessary code and large files for your website too.¬†¬†

Always strive to have your web pages load at an acceptable speed. But do not sacrifice good content for the sake of having a faster loading website. Place onto your page what is necessary to achieve your goals, optimize all of it and remove any extra fluff. 

4. Out-dated design and not user-friendly 

Websites that look outdated, probably are. If you can’t keep your website looking modern, then your customers will perceive you, your brand, your products and services to be old and stale too.¬†¬†

Make sure your website looks good and stays fresh using modern design trends.  

Also, make sure it’s user-friendly. Think about other websites and platforms that your customers are using, like social media apps and online banking portals. The user-friendliness of your website is being compared to those other sites. So make sure your website is equally as user-friendly.¬†

5. Having no call-to-action 

I often see sites with a lot of stuff on the page, but no clear instruction on what the user should do next. Have a clear call-to-action on each page. This can be a download now button. A newsletter sign-up form. Or a click-to-call.  

Whatever it is, make sure it is clear and easily found.  

Make sure to not overload the page with too many call-to-actions. Have one main call-to-action per page. Too many and your users might get confused about what you want them to do, which could result in them leaving your website without actually doing anything.  

6. Non-responsive design 

Nowadays people are accessing websites from desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and even TVs. Not only that, but every device and every brand has a different screen size or screen resolution.  

It is important that your it resizes to the different screen sizes, looks good and operates well on them too.  

This is what we call responsive design, and it’s when your website responds well to the screen it is being used on by adapting its layout to fit.¬†

If your user has to scroll left and right unnecessarily to see your content, your website isn’t responsive. You have to fix that.¬†

7. Complicated forms and processes 

Try and keep the number of clicks, processes and form fields required down to a minimum. Remember your customers are also busy people just like you and they would like to get things done as quickly and possible too.  

Always reduce the amount of time it takes to do anything on your site.  

Only ask for the most necessary information on a form, and keep forms short and quick to complete.  

Also, reduce the number of steps required to do things on your website like using a one-page checkout in an e-commerce store or reducing the number of steps required to request a quote.  

Remember, when designing any website, always put the needs of your target customer and your business objectives first. Then design your website accordingly to achieve those without any extra bloat.
